Homeowners need stronger protections against rogue traders and scammers, particularly those who work in the unregulated spray foam industry and who continually capitalise on the government green energy schemes ECO4 and GBIS to scam homeowners.
British Standards is a name recognised with safety and quality and most recently a whitepaper has been written, which contains the most important news for homeowners who have spray foam insulation in their properties.
The SFIR Home Improvements team specialise in providing professional roof reports, pre-foam removal reports, post removal reports and providing certification that the major banks, building societies accept so they can offer funding to the homeowners and the purchasers.
Great News today (17th July 2025), we had a customer that was referred to us by an estate agent, who had spray foam insulation badly removed by another company. She was trying to sell her property, but the surveyor was not happy with the way the work was done.
We carried out a pre-removal roof assessment, provide a detailed report, was instructed to complete the works needed, provided a post removal report with pictures, and issued a removal certificate.
We have a very happy customer (lady) who just phoned us to say the mortgage company have authorised the buyers mortgage, having received our removal certificate and post removal report.
The buyers mortgage was through First Direct, which is part of HSBC.

We received a call from a very upset homeowner who had previously paid a company to remove the spray foam from her house. This is just one of 14 pictures that shows how they left her home with lots of spray foam behind the rafters, all over the bitumen felt and charged thousands and she still couldn't sell her home.
She contacted SFIR Home Improvements and we carried out a professional roof report.
Having completed the report and sent this to the customer. She discussed this with her family and friends and she decided (without any pressure) to make a decision to have the spray foam removed from her property.
The picture above is just one showing the clean loft space, all of the foam was removed from the bitumen felt, from the rafters, and from the ridge line. Additionally we made sure the roof was ventilated.
There are so many businesses that have previously sold spray foam and are now removing it that even they are starting to believe their own lies. We provide you with a pre-removal report, a post removal report and a certificate, which not only guarantees the work we have completed for the homeowner, but confirms the loft space is dry, ventilated, free from any damp and confirms the spray foam has been professionally removed.
It may sound obvious, but so many companies neglect to inspect the loft space correctly. Here at SFIR we start by making sure the roof structure is in good order. After the spray foam has been removed we complete a detailed assessment of the roof timbers for rot, fungal growth, or structural weakening caused by trapped moisture from spray foam insulation, we take moisture readings to ensure no damp or moisture is present. One of our loft assessors will evaluate the quality of the spray foam removal work undertaken in your loft, ensuring complete and proper removal without any residual material being left behind.
Removing closed cell polyurethane spray foam is an intense and laborious operation. Many of the new start up companies and those who have previously sold spray foam do not understand the techniques needed to remove the spray foam from the back of the tiles or the bitumen felt membrane. We use the revolutionary CWB process, which produces great results and cleans the tiles without any damage, with very little pressure applied to the tile, unlike others who use crowbars, cold chisels and hammers, which can all cause severe damage to the roof structure.
Before you have spray foam removed get a professional surveyor, preferably a RICS registered surveyor (ask to see their ID and registration number) and ask them to do a report for you.
Their report should detail the issues with the spray foam installed in your loft, they can identify whether the spray foam should have been installed, they can check the roof timbers for damp or any moisture, they can recommend whether you have it removed or not, but as a professional surveyor they will give you the right advice.
Cowboys are operating in the spray foam industry and could be working in your area. Before you have spray foam removed get a professional surveyor, preferably a RICS registered surveyor (ask to see their ID and registration number) to complete a report on your roof.
This will tell you whether your foam is installed correctly and whether it should be removed.
SFIR are delighted to bring you really good news......
